The Bible moralisée by the Limbourg Brothers, Ms. Fr. 166 Bibliothèque nationale de France, stands as an extraordinary masterpiece crafted for Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, in the early 15th century. This ambitious endeavour aimed to illustrate biblical scenes on each page, resulting in over 513 miniature masterpieces. Despite the untimely passing of the duke, the manuscript continued to evolve, with subsequent owners and artists contributing a total of 255 miniatures. Despite being left incomplete, the codex remains impressive with its 338 lavishly illuminated pages. Serving as a quintessential example of late Medieval book art, the Bible moralisée by the Limbourg brothers attests to their skill and the popularity of such works during that period. In Art History the names of the Duke of Berry and of the Limbourg brothers are closely related. The duke was the most famous bibliophile of his time. The Limbourg brothers entered his service, as court painters, in 1405. A few years later they illuminated the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry, their other masterpiece. Bound in red leather with gold ornaments and the arms of the French kings whose court library in Blois it entered during the reign of King Charles VIII.
