Oversized red cloth boards with gilt lettering; bw frontispiece, XXIV, 183 pp; 75 bw plates with descriptive guard sheets. Translated by the Rev. Henry Francis Cary, M.A. and beautifully illustrated with the designs of M. Gustave Dore. With critical and explanatory notes, life of Dante, and chronology. Each plate accompanied by leaf with descriptive letterpress. Includes bibliographical references. Condition: Internally this is an lovely example, other than a couple of creased tissue guards near the front the condition is suprisingly clean and fresh for its age. Externally the boards are rubbed and front hinge is weak and starting to split. Nevertheless this is a great find being the first edition published in London by Cassell Petter & Galpin and dated 1866
